The Challenge
Beyondbmi are an innovate healthcare services provider offering sustainable weight loss with a medically-led comprehensive program involving doctors, dietitians, nurses and health coaches.
In order to provide this service to their customers, Beyondbmi developed a custom digital platform that provides program access to their users including electronic health records, and with access by the medical professionals to interact their patients efficiently. All of this can be done from the comfort of the users’ home, making it accessible to even those in remote locations or with limited mobility.
Although Beyondbmi had already setup an AWS platform, they were looking to ensure that this platform could meet AWS best practices, based on the AWS Well-Architected framework. This was important to Beyondbmi to ensure that their platform was secure, reliable, performant, cost efficient, and sustainable. And to do this, they needed a partner to help them on their journey.
The Solution
The Beyondbmi platform was reviewed, re-designed and deployed by Ergo following AWS Well-Architected principles as follows:
Operational excellence:
- The platform was designed with Terraform Infrastructure as code to improve consistency, eliminate configuration drift and provide a more stable and scalable environment.
Security:
- In way of security controls, Ergo implemented an array of AWS services such as AWS IAM, Guard Duty, Inspector, Shield, Network Firewalls, Key management, Certificate manager, Backup, as well as other services to ensure the Beyondbmi platform was secure for its users and customers, meeting strict regulatory control standards.
- With the implementation of AWS Control tower, a landing zone was deployed to ensure best practices were met for access, security, compliance and account structure.
Reliability:
- In relation to availability, this environment was deployed across multiple availability zones based within Ireland, offering protection from natural disasters and potential availability zone issues. In addition, this solution is backed up utilizing Veeam backup and replication software.
- The native AWS Backup platform was utilized to provide granular backup and restore capability for critical systems.
Performance Efficiency:
- Leveraging the likes of AWS Cloudwatch for capacity and performance management takes the guesswork out of ensuring that the infrastructure is there to meet application demands, even during peak demand periods.
- In addition, using Lambda serverless functions to avoid the overhead of lifecycle managing full virtual machines has delivered excellent efficiency within the Beyondbmi platform.
Cost Optimization:
- Ergo implemented AWS cost explorer to monitor for zombie assets, unattached volumes, and to look for right-sizing opportunities and to help advise on when it may be appropriate to leverage AWS reserved instances or savings plans to drive down overall total cost of operating within AWS. This is constantly monitored as part of the Ergo managed service.
Sustainability:
- Ergo leverage the AWS carbon footprint tool to help Beyond BMI in monitoring their impact on the environment and how simple changes can make a major impact on their sustainability goals. This solution is often tied in with cost optimization, where rightsizing of workloads, and retirement of zombie assets can also reduce power consumption, and hence aid in driving a sustainable IT platform for Beyondbmi.
All of this is wrapped up within an Ergo managed service, providing ongoing support, change management and maintenance of the Beyond BMI platform.
The Benefits
The benefits achieved were as follows,
- A more secure platform ensuring the protection of critical data for the organisation and their clients as well as meeting strict regulatory standards.
- With the use of infrastructure as code where feasible, Beyondbmi have been able to reduce the chance of human error in the deployment of various services within the Beyondbmi platform, providing a more consistent and reliable platform.
- Leveraging the power of the AWS Cloudwatch platform has provided Beyondbmi with the ability to scale on demand, responding faster to business needs
- Reduced costs of running the platform via the deployment of AWS cost explorer resulting in right-sizing and removal of zombie assets.
- Visibility into the sustainability of the Beyondbmi platform via the AWS carbon footprint tool outputs.
