At Ergo, we believe in empowering our people and providing them with opportunities to grow, prioritising career fulfilment and longevity, across all teams, disciplines, and borders. It’s important to celebrate those journeys and the incredible individuals behind them.
Today we’re featuring Karolina Coates, BoatyardX’s Head of Design, who shares her experience navigating the tech industry as a woman. Karolina talks openly about the challenges she’s faced, what’s helped her grow, and the advice she hopes will encourage more women to explore careers in tech. Her story reflects the kind of inclusive, supportive environment we’re committed to building at Ergo — one where people can learn, thrive, and make an impact.
We asked Karolina three questions about her experience:
What has your experience been like as a woman in tech? Particularly at Ergo?
Like many women in tech, I’ve often been the only one in the room. At Ergo and BoatyardX I’ve seen positive change – driven by amazing women and allies – but true equity requires more than individual effort. It’s about changing systems, not just asking women to ‘lean in’.
What challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them?
The biggest challenge is not lack of ambition from women, but structures that make careers harder to sustain – especially mid-career, when family responsibilities peak. I’ve navigated this by building networks of support and by pushing for cultures where women don’t just join but stay and grow.
What advice would you give to other women considering a career in tech, and how can companies like Ergo better support and empower them?
My advice: your belonging is not conditional – tech needs your perspective. Companies can do more by addressing the structural barriers: accessible childcare, flexible pathways, equitable pay, and cultures that value diverse leadership styles. It’s not just the right thing to do – it’s a good business.

Karolina’s story is a great reminder of how learning, support, and real perseverance can shape your career. Stay tuned for more Life at Ergo features as we continue to highlight the people who make Ergo what it is.
