A lot of the key decisions which companies should make are never made as the skills to make them are not readily available in the existing team and its too expensive to go hire another full-time employee. This is an issue we have seen a lot of and in a world full of digital innovation, you cannot afford to sit on traditional models for too long without an innovation plan. There are always small bodies of work that can be taken on if you had access to the right people. At Ergo we have been building up a team of consultants who are ideally placed to provide that short-term engagement.

An example recently was a property-based firm who had no searchable system for all property details and contracts outside of paper versions. There were some electronic files, but they were scattered all over the organisation. In this case Ergo provided a strong database person with business analyse skills to develop a design document and technical approach that the client could use to seek funding for a larger project. The engagement was only for 2 weeks but that 2 weeks gave the organisation the document and design they needed to make a proposal for a large project to the board.

Another example was a customer with a 15-year-old CRM system that was poorly integrated with the organisation as it lacked any of the office tools links into document management and email. They heavily relied on it and were fearful of change and the huge cost of a replacement system. They approached Ergo for a resource to help them decide on whether to improve the system or leave it was it was. Our consultant did a full technical review, interviewed one stakeholder from every department and documented all the issues and gaps in the existing system. He met other customers who were like see what approaches they were taken and looked at the leading 3 CRM systems for this industry in the market. This “As Is” model was then compared to what they visioned as an ideal future system, there “To be” CRM system. This was presented to the board and they then had the information needed to decide to replace the system. This engagement was for 24 days. Later Ergo were asked to provide a programme manager to run the procurement process and a new CRM system was chosen.
